At first I could hardly believe my ears when a good friend told me that while visiting Paris in September, she had seen that Hermès had opened a florist’s shop in their newly-opened department store at 17 Rue de Sèvres, 75006 Paris – so I booked a ticket to Paris to see for myself the flowers in the context of one of the world's strongest luxury brands.
The sun shone from a clear blue sky, the shop opened at 10:30, and I was beaming just like the sun, too. Because my friend was right: there were flowers on sale in the Hermès store. Outside, I found for example Campanula White GET MEE®, which had been placed in a fine glass pot, for 25 euros in all, and inside I found Schlumbergera White FLAME®, with the Hermès ribbon, in a zinc pot for 24 euros. In Danish kroner, these prices are far more than you would expect to pay anywhere else – there is certainly a long way up to the DKK 185 that was on the price tag in Paris.
The concept is that Hermès rents out the concession to Baptiste Fleurs, who have one other outlet in Paris in addition to the newly-opened shop in Hermès. It
was also a very positive experience to see how the sales assistant was careful to explain to the customers how to care for the flowers they had bought.
It is naturally surprising to see that such a big and strong luxury brand is using our products to draw customers into their store, and that they dare to ask a price which is far higher than we see elsewhere. Perhaps there is something we have overlooked.....
